Introducing WAM!
We are excited to announce the launch of Wolfe Alternative Asset Management ("WAM")i, an important extension of Wolfe Research for our clients.
Since our inception nearly two decades ago, Wolfe Research has continuously invested in developing a scaled independent equity research platform, that many of our institutional clients use as part of their investment process as they seek to understand and value public companies, sectors and markets through deep rooted, timely, rigorous and independent fundamental, macro and quantitative research. This DNA, combined with over a year of planning and building behind the scenes, will be leveraged to help our clients navigate the more opaque, illiquid and less understood realm of private company investing.
As public and private markets continue to converge, we believe that Wolfe Research and WAM offer investors a more comprehensive picture of the markets, combining Wolfe Research’s deep public market research with WAM’s private market capabilities. We seek to find quality businesses at different stages of their life cycle across sectors for ourselves and investors to invest side-by-side as single entities. Unlike pooled fund structures, WAM’s deal-by-deal approach gives investors the ability to choose which opportunities to pursue, with transparency into each investment.
Wolfe Alternative Asset Management ("WAM") is a division of Wolfe Research Advisors, LLC ("WRA"), an SEC-registered investment adviser. WAM's products and services are offered through WRA and its affiliated companies, each acting in their respective regulatory capacities. Fund and investment management services are provided by WRA. Platform technology services are provided by Wolfe Research, LLC ("WR"), an affiliate of WRA. Placement agent and brokerage services are provided by WR Securities, LLC ("WRS"), doing business as Wolfe Research Securities, a registered broker-dealer and member of FINRA, SIPC, and the NFA, and an affiliate of WRA and WR.
Why Now?
Increasing inventory, liquidity and opportunity to generate alpha make private markets critical for investors. We see an acceleration in the growth of the opportunity set, with an increasing share accounted for in the private markets. The shift in investment patterns is hard to ignore.
The alternative investment market now stands at more than $22 trillion in AUM, roughly 15% of global assets, having more than tripled over the past decade from roughly $5 to $7 trillion in 2015, representing a compound annual growth rate of roughly 15%.ii Underpinning that growth is a deeper shift: companies now stay private for longer and create more of their value before going public, leaving public-market investors with less exposure to the value creation that historically occurred after an IPO.
As more value continues to migrate to the private markets, the line between the two markets is blurring. Companies stay private longer and investors now operate on both sides of the line. Therefore, understanding and exploiting sector dynamics requires seeing opportunities across public and private markets alike. This convergence is precisely why Wolfe’s roster of seasoned analysts with deep fundamental knowledge across public and private players is well positioned to help investors navigate the rapidly evolving landscape.
Why WAM?
In our view, public markets are increasingly indexed, correlated, and dominated by a handful of mega-cap names, leaving alpha generation harder to come by. Top-tier private deals have often been concentrated among the largest institutions, leaving most qualified investors on the outside. WAM hopes to change those dynamics for our Members.
The same forces that make this asset class attractive also make it difficult to access. Sourcing, diligence, and trust are the real challenges for qualified investors, and these are precisely the capabilities Wolfe Research has spent two decades building. WAM stakeholders will be able to benefit from that accumulated experience, network, and institutional knowledge.
Our advantage begins with our existing and growing network. Wolfe Research has developed relationships with more than 1,200 institutional clients, over 2,100 private companies and their management teams, and a research platform used by more than 45,000 individuals, spanning coverage across 114 unique sub-sectors.iii In a market where sourcing and access are among the hardest problems to solve, that reach is a meaningful advantage. It is how WAM will identify and evaluate differentiated investment opportunities beyond the reach of traditional channels.
We built WAM to widen our clients’ access to this asset class and co-invest with them, rather than compete with them for it. WAM invests alongside its Members, creating direct alignment between our interests and theirs.
Private markets place a high premium on trust. Information is limited, positions are illiquid, and investors must rely on the judgment and integrity of whoever sources and diligences an opportunity. That has long been a core strength of Wolfe Research and a standard we have held ourselves to for nearly two decades: independent, rigorous, and honest about what we do and do not know. WAM is built on those same principles, and it will be held to the same standard.
The timing is not coincidental. Investors we know best are already asking for this. The institutions, family offices, and individuals who rely on Wolfe Research in the public markets increasingly want a disciplined path into the private ones, and WAM was designed to offer a reliable and trustworthy platform to our members.
What Makes WAM Unique
WAM is designed as a comprehensive alternative investment platform. At its core, WAM is a members-only, subscription-based platform. Through a single annual membership, clients gain entry to opportunities across the private markets that most investors cannot readily access, and choose which to pursue on a deal-by-deal, single entity basis.
Private Market Investment Access: This is the core of what we do. Members review opportunities across venture capital, private equity, secondaries, and private funds, with no blind pools and no mandatory commitments. You decide which opportunities to pursue and invest at your own discretion. Every investment is structured through a dedicated vehicle, subjected to rigorous due diligence, and supported by a detailed investment memorandum, ongoing mark-to-market reporting, and K-1 delivery as applicable, all accessible through the Member portal. In every transaction, WAM invests alongside its Members, so our interests are aligned by capital, not merely by promise. Access is subject to applicable investor eligibility standards and offering terms.
For larger institutional, RIA, and family office clients, WAM can also serve as dedicated private investment infrastructure. Rather than build the necessary capabilities to successfully compete in-house, a client can deploy capital through WAM across the companies, sectors, or funds it chooses, with WAM handling sourcing, diligence, and vehicle administration consistent with a client’s objectives, capital deployment goals, and risk appetite.
Liquidity and Placements: Liquidity is among the hardest problems in private markets, and WAM is being built to address it directly. In the future, we plan to facilitate liquidity for buyers and sellers of existing private positions across venture, private equity, and fund interests, bringing price discovery and orderly execution to a market that has often lacked it. We plan to work with private companies to structure and execute secondary transactions that give founders and early employees partial liquidity without forcing a full exit, and to give Members the ability to optimize, reduce, or exit positions in their own portfolios at their discretion. Alongside this, our placement and referral business will help companies and funds execute larger, time-sensitive transactions through Wolfe Research's network.
Access, Insight, and Community: Alternatives are a relationship business, and WAM is building the connections that most platforms lack. Members gain access to WAM conferences and events, anchored by an annual WAM Summit focused on the themes, strategies, and companies shaping private markets. In addition to the flagship conference, members can join executive sessions and fireside chats with the founders and management teams of leading private companies, roundtable dinners with senior investors across venture capital, private equity, and the public markets, sub-sector conferences, members-only networking events built for co-investment and collaboration, and long-form content and conversations with influential founders, executives, and investors. This will allow members to stay close to the people and ideas driving the asset class, rather than just the deals.
Each component is valuable on its own. Together, they offer something rare in the market: investing, liquidity, and access in one integrated solution, backed by a brand investors already trust. WAM brings those capabilities together in a single alternative investment platform, extending Wolfe Research’s reach from the public markets into the private markets—and giving our clients a more complete view of where value is being created.
